Chloë Grace Moretz and Riz Ahmed are set to bring their respective graphic novel characters to life in the highly-anticipated Netflix film “Nimona.”

Based on ND Stevenson’s bestselling queer graphic novel from 2015, “Nimona” finally makes its way to the big screen this summer. Previously shelved by Walt Disney Co., the film faced controversy over the inclusion of a same-sex kiss, resulting in its cancellation.

However, Netflix acquired the rights to the film in April 2022 and joined forces with Annapurna Pictures to ensure its completion. Production resumed in early 2022 with the collaboration of DNEG Animation.

The official synopsis of the Netflix film follows the story of Ballister Boldheart (played by Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world who finds himself framed for a crime he didn’t commit.

The only hope he has to prove his innocence is Nimona (played by Chloë Grace Moretz), a mischievous teenager with a penchant for chaos and the ability to shape-shift into different forms.

As the kingdom turns against Ballister, Nimona becomes his unlikely sidekick. Together, they blur the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters, embarking on a mission to unleash havoc while Ballister seeks redemption and Nimona embraces her wild nature.

The cast of “Nimona” also includes Eugene Lee Yang, Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, Beck Bennett, Indya Moore, RuPaul Charles, Julio Torres, and Sarah Sherman.

The film is co-directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, with a screenplay by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor.

Producers include Karen Ryan, Julie Zackary, and Roy Lee, while Megan Ellison, Robert L. Baird, Andrew Millstein, John Powers Middleton, and author ND Stevenson serve as executive producers.

Expressing excitement over Netflix’s distribution of the film, ND Stevenson tweeted, “‘Nimona’ has always been a resilient story, and now it has an amazing team fighting for it. I’m thrilled to announce that THE NIMONA MOVIE IS ALIVE, coming to you in 2023 from Annapurna and Netflix.”
